Known as "The Paris of South America," Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and the largest city in the country. Located on the Southern shores of the Rio de Plata (River of Silver) the architecture and culture of Buenos Aires echo its European settlement. It is a city of grand culture, sports, art, music and passion; birthplace of Nobel Prize winning author Jorge Luis Borges and famous fútbol star Diego Maradona. Many visitors to Buenos Aires are astounded by its blend of modernity and old colonial history.

Learn

Our school is located in the charming neighborhood of San Telmo, the most picturesque part of Buenos Aires complete with cobblestone streets and colonial buildings. Intensive Spanish courses will take place each morning, Monday through Friday, for four hours per day. You will be given a placement exam upon arrival and assigned to a class of the appropriate level. Classes will be taught in small groups of students to give a more personalized, interactive approach to learning. Classes are focused on listening comprehension and conversation. You will also learn specifics about Argentine culture during your coursework, covering topics such as the Gaucho Culture (Argentina's Cowboys) and Argentine History.

Experience

Two to three weekday afternoons per week, you will participate in a variety of cultural, leisure and/or community service activities. You will visit notable museums, churches and local markets while wandering the cobbled streets on a city tour of Buenos Aires. You will also have the opportunity for a guided tour of The Presidential Palace and the Congressional buildings, an inside look at where the Argentine government keeps the country running. You will even have the chance to learn Tango from the pros!

Travel

You will have the chance to explore Argentina through the following included three weekend excursions:

  • Tigre: Visit the port of Tigre, the open market with streets full of the colors of rustic fabric, furniture and accessories made in cane and willow, delicious jams and honey, brilliant flowers, and of course, all the variety of native fruit coexisting in absolute harmony.
  • Colonia: See Colonia, famous for its winding, cobble streets and intriguing history.
  • Argentine Estancia: Experience a typical Argentine ranch and try the famous Argentine BBQ – called an asado – watch Argentine cowboys "gauchos" exhibit their skills and much more.

Housing

Intrax Study Abroad students will stay with carefully selected host families in Buenos Aires. Homestays allow for a deeper immersion into Argentine culture and give students the opportunity to practice their Spanish with native Spanish speakers. Adjustment to host family life and Argentine culture will be assisted by an On-Site Coordinator.
