Explore
Located on Queensland's picturesque Northeastern coast, Cairns is one of Australia's most remote and beautiful cities. The region is renowned for its spectacular scenery and rugged topography, marked by swift rivers, deep gorges and timeless waterfalls. Cairns is also the gateway city to two of the world's greatest natural treasures: the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, a World Heritage site. Truly a diverse and international city, Cairns boasts a rich culture forever linked to the region's natural beauty, pioneering history and sense of adventure.
Learn
Participants will be paired with an Australian high school student and experience the Australian education system, culture and daily life from a uniquely "Aussie" point of view. The curriculum includes high school courses that teach students about the fascinating history and culture of the Australian continent, and incorporate sports activities and special projects designed to teach ways to preserve the unique cultural traditions and natural environment indigenous to Australia.
Experience
The natural beauty of Queensland is woven into the fabric of Australian life, and as a result, the lifestyle here is relaxed and intertwined with nature. Intrax Study Abroad has approached this program with that in mind, maintaining a good balance between planned activity and free time. Two or three days per week organized activities will be offered, including visits to Holloway's Beach Environmental Education Centre, Aboriginal art classes, hiking and participating in what locals call a "Green Day."
Travel
Here is a sample of some of the guided excursions students will enjoy to fascinating destinations in Australia.
- Tinaroo Environmental Centre: Tinaroo Centre offers a variety of environmental and outdoor experiences such as freshwater and forest studies, energy efficiency, leadership and wilderness adventures.
- Mungalli Falls Student Village & Wilderness Retreat: Students will also travel to Mungalli Falls Student Village & Wilderness Retreat, the largest and most spectacular experiential, interactive retreat in Queensland, set on 500 acres of World Heritage rainforest.
- Program Finale – The Great Barrier Reef! As a program finale, students will explore the Great Barrier Reef on a boat trip to Green Island, a small cay on the Barrier Reef with a luxury resort as its centerpiece.
Housing
Intrax Study Abroad students will stay with carefully selected host families to allow for a deeper immersion into Australian culture. Throughout the program, students will be supported by an On-Site Coordinator.
