Explore

The city of Oxford has been known as a center for higher education since medieval times, attracting students from around the world. While Oxford has a rich history, it is also a modern, international university center. The Intrax Summer Cultural Exploration program in England is designed to give students a broad overview of English culture, theater and literature from ancient time to the present. Utilizing England as a classroom, the program provides students with the opportunity to discover the evolution of English culture firsthand, through museum visits, walking tours and theater performances. Oxford itself was home to some popular modern authors such as C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), J.R.R Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), as well as the characters in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter!

Learn

Classes are taught Monday through Friday for three hours per day and will cover a broad range of English culture with an emphasis on literature and theater. The curriculum has an interactive approach; students will attend performances of several plays and an effort will be made to tie pieces with the physical place in which they were created. Shakespeare will be studied in Stratford-upon-Avon, his home town; other readings will focus on authors with connections to Oxford such as Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, JRR Tolkien and Iris Murdoch as well as works which have been set wholly or partially in the city. Topics in English art will be taught in Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, the oldest museum in England.

Experience

The Summer Cultural Exploration program in England takes full advantage of its location, expanding learning beyond the classroom through organized afternoon and evening activities two to three days per week. Activities include a walking tour of the historic colleges of Oxford, a visit to the Bodleian Library, a visit of Blenheim Palace and two theater performances.

Travel

Students will continue their exploration of English theater, history and culture through a series of guided cultural excursions including:

  • Stratford-Upon-Avon
Discover the hometown of playwright William Shakespeare. Visit the house in which Shakespeare was born and Anne Hathaway's Cottage.
  • London
One of the world's truly great cities, London is the capital of the English-speaking theater world. You will experience a major West End theater production as well as a private, behind the scenes visit to a theater, which will include a round table discussion with actors and other professionals in the dramatic arts. A comprehensive city tour will highlight London's principal architectural landmarks.
  • Bath & Stonehenge
Explore Stonehenge, one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments. The Stonehenge site consists of massive circles of 5,000 year old stones, meticulously arranged to form an ancient astronomical clock. Later, visit the beautiful city of Bath. Home to the only natural hot springs in Britain, Bath is famous for its temple and bathing complex built by the Romans. Bath is also known for its Georgian architecture and picturesque countryside setting.

Housing

Students will stay in a residence hall at an Oxford College in twin rooms with shared bathroom facilities on the same floor. There will be an Intrax Study Abroad On-Site Coordinator living in the residence hall with the students. Meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be served at the dining hall located on campus. There is an 11pm curfew for this program.
