Students who choose an academic year or a semester program in Germany will live with a host family and attend a local public high school.

Learn

The German school system is very different from its American counterpart. Their system is divided into three types of schools that lead students toward a vocational or academic future. Intrax Study Abroad students will attend what is called the Gymnasium. This is a nine-year secondary school that provides a comprehensive general education for students who wish to continue their studies at the university level. Only 30% of German students enter these prestigious schools.

School subjects are divided into three general categories: language, literature and art; the social sciences; and mathematics, science and technology. Students are required to take classes in each of these three categories. Typically subjects such as music, art and physical education, play a minor role in the school system, and students participate in these extra-curricular activities outside of school.

At least one year of high school German language study or demonstrated equivalent is required for semester and academic year programs, as all classes are conducted in German.

Why study German? German is spoken by 109 million people worldwide! More Europeans are native speakers of German than of English, French, Italian, or Spanish.

Experience

German host families are eager to welcome American students and share their history and customs. Families are typically very active and enjoy outdoor activities including: biking, hiking, swimming, skiing and playing tennis. The cultural arts, especially music and theater are well supported in Germany. Even the smallest cities have festivals, musical performances and social events for you and your family to enjoy. As a teenager in Germany, you might find you have a bit more independence than you would at home. Communication and mutual respect are important in developing a close relationship with your host family

Program Details

Academic Year, Fall and Spring Semester students are given an orientation upon arrival in Berlin, which includes an initial introduction to this fast-paced, fascinating city. Students will also enjoy some group excursions throughout the program with other Intrax Study Abroad students in their placement region. Students are placed with carefully selected host families throughout Germany. Students meet regularly with a local representative in order to ease adjustment to German culture and family life. Additional assistance/support is provided by the head office in Berlin. Public transportation throughout Germany is very accessible. Transportation costs are the student's responsibility, including daily transportation to and from school, if necessary

Students do not need a visa to study in Germany. However, once on program, they are required to apply for a residence permit for the duration of their stay. Students will be assisted in this process by an Intrax local representative
