Explore

Join Intrax Study Abroad for a fifteen day program in paradise! Carved into a stunning landscape where the sea meets the mountains, Sorrento is surrounded by a multitude of world-renowned historic, artistic, and naturally scenic destinations. Neighboring Naples boasts antiquity and exceptional cuisine while Mount Vesuvius casts its long shadow across the blue water and citrus groves of the Amalfi Coast. The coastline is breathtaking, and you will visit the famous town of Positano, of which John Steinbeck described: "It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone. Its houses climb a hill so steep it would be a cliff except that stairs are cut in it."

The Intrax Summer Cultural Exploration program in Sorrento is truly an experience set apart from all other study abroad programs. Relax in luxury facilities with bungalows, lovely gardens, and an exclusive pool. Experience, with specialized guides, first class excursions to some of the most coveted destinations in Europe including Capri, Positano, Naples and Pompeii. Our Sorrento program focuses on creating an intimate language learning environment through smaller classes and more individualized attention.

Immerse yourself in Italian culture while studying Italian language in a safe, picturesque, and culturally rich environment.

Learn

Intrax Study Abroad students study Italian language and culture for four hours each day, Monday through Friday. Classes take place in the heart of Sorrento in a historic 19th century building facing the sea, just minutes from the Piazza Tasso and the Cathedral. Students will experience an innovative and conversational approach to language learning through a curriculum approved by the Italian Ministry of Public Education. Courses are practical, stimulating and interactive, with teaching materials not only from textbooks, but also from newspaper articles, magazines, and audio/video materials. The overall objective is to enable students to communicate effectively in Italian, to confront the most important daily situations confidently, express their ideas and be able to interact with Italians.

Students will receive an orientation their first day at school, and will take a language placement exam to ensure they are put in to the right level class. Based on this exam, students are then assigned to one of six levels: Beginner (I & II), Intermediate (I & II), or Advanced (I & II). All levels include a wide range of activities in order to develop reading comprehension, listening, writing and oral skills. The beginner levels focus on verbal communication and grammar while the intermediate and advanced levels work more in-depth on the writing process. The courses are all taught by fully qualified language instructors, and the average student-to-teacher ratio is 10:1.

Experience

Two to three afternoons per week are dedicated to planned activities. Afternoon activities include museum visits, walking tours, cooking classes, sports, swimming and shopping.

With the beach only minutes away from the school, you can enjoy volleyball with your friends, sunbathe in the Mediterranean sun, or even take a canoe out into the Bay. While in town, sip a cappuccino or enjoy a gelato on the Piazza Tasso, where locals and foreigners alike soak in the enchanting atmosphere. Stroll along the cobbled streets of Sorrento and sample pizza made fresh for you while you wait.

If you like fashion, you will have a chance to shop in the many boutiques on the chic island of Capri, or the famous resort of Positano. For those on a smaller budget, there are fantastic shops in Sorrento to suit everybody's taste.

Travel

Students will experience some of Italy's wonders through the following all-inclusive organized excursions:

  • Pompeii - Buried by volcanic ashes when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii is one of the world's most awe-inspiring archaeological sites. You will see firsthand what Roman life was like 2000 years ago as you wander through mazes of pristinely-preserved villas, temples and baths.
  • Capri - Beautiful views of the Amalfi coastline are revealed by a boat trip across the Bay of Naples to the captivating and mountainous Isle of Capri. You will see the Arco Naturale, a majestic stone arch on the eastern cliffs and the famous Faraglioni, three enormous limestone rocks that loom out of the sea. On the main part of the island you'll wander through quaint towns before enjoying some free time to eat and shop. If the waters are not too rough, you may get to visit the famous Grotta Azzurra, a partially submerged sea cave where Roman royalty used to bathe.
  • Naples - Italy's liveliest city, Naples is the second most populous city in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Its complex history has contributed greatly to Italy's rich historical, artistic and cultural traditions as well as provided some of the best food in the world! Explore a variety of museums, amphitheatres and ruins; visit churches, palaces and monuments; and buy an authentic pizza napolitana while you stroll through the old town of Spaccanapoli.

Housing

Intrax Study Abroad students will stay in twin-occupancy bungalows situated in one of the oldest orange and lemon groves of the Sorrentina peninsula, and only 200 meters from the sea! The luxurious facility has a swimming pool, lovely gardens, and is only a 15-20 minute walk from the historic center of Sorrento. All meals, as well as a cooking class, are included in the program price. There is a 10:30PM curfew for this program on weekdays and 11:30PM on weekends. An Intrax On-Site Coordinator will stay with the students and be available to provide assistance when needed.
