Experience
Norwegians love the outdoors and sports. Sports teams are not affiliated with schools, but each community has its own sports clubs for individual and team competition. Students will be able to join various clubs and activities including soccer, handball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, golf, ice hockey, and skiing. Norwegians love to walk, and often the family car is used only for long distance travel. Many families participate in the performing arts, either by performing themselves or by attending theater performances, concerts, and other cultural events. Students interested in the arts can find clubs for music, singing, dancing, drama and arts and crafts.
Learn
Norwegians spend three years in high school, called Gymnasium, in preparation for higher education. The school year is divided into two semesters. Students must take a certain number of mandatory subjects, but are free to choose among various electives. Typical subjects in a Norwegian high school include: physics, physical education, language and literature, math, geography, computer science, English, biology, dance, history, chemistry, and music.
While no previous language study is required, we strongly suggest that students prepare by learning some basic phrases in Norwegian, as all classes are conducted in Norwegian.
Why study Norwegian? You'll develop a deeper understanding of Norwegian culture and gain the ability to communicate with Danes and Swedes, as well as 4.6 million Norwegians!
Program Details
Students are placed with carefully selected families throughout Norway. Different regions in Norway have their own dialect and cultural characteristics. Adjustment to host family life and Norwegian culture will be assisted by a program representative.
Optional organized trips, including a short tour of Europe at the end of the school year, are available to Academic Year and Spring Semester students at an additional cost. More information about the optional trips and pricing will be given when students are on program.
Students do not need a visa to study in Norway. However, once on program, they are required to apply for a residence permit for the duration of their stay. Students will be assisted in this process by a program representative.
