Explore

Sitting near the Southern tip of the African continent, with its temperate climate and the majestic Table Mountain rising in the background, Cape Town is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has an architecture and lifestyle which are broadly cosmopolitan yet quintessentially Capetonian. With a diversity of people and landscapes - from the mountains, lush indigenous gardens to sandy beaches, the Cape is the perfect place for the adventurous spirit. Intrax Summer Cultural Exploration program provides students the opportunity to study and explore on location, going beyond the classroom to learn about the world's most important issues.

Learn

Engage in lively discussions about current events in Africa in an intimate classroom environment Monday through Friday for three hours per day. These educational sessions, facilitated by experienced teachers will enable students to develop an understanding of African history and literature, African language, and the unique ecology and zoology of the Cape. Students will also hear from expert and compelling guest speakers, on topics ranging from apartheid to AIDS and economic development.

Experience

Weekday excursions bring the material discussed in the classroom to life and allow students to experience the beauty of Cape Town. Students engage in community service every afternoon, from Monday to Thursday. Students will be able to give back to the local community through volunteer in small groups in and around Cape Town. Such work will help students appreciate the importance of public service, and understand the problems brought by the legacy of Apartheid. Service projects may include: working with children in primary schools, helping build a township home, assisting the elderly or beautifying a community.

Travel

Students will have the chance to explore the awe-inspiring country of South Africa through the following included weekend excursions:

  • Hermanus - Nature lovers from all over the world visit Hermanus to view the Southern Right Whale. It is one of the world's prime locations for whale watching.
  • Robben Island & Table Mountain - Visit the historic island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Plan for a day of adventure as you hike up majestic Table Mountain and bike to awe-inspiring Cape Point
  • Program Finale: Wild Life Game Reserve! - No African experience would be complete without seeing wild animals in their natural habitat. After the program, students will travel to a Game Reserve where they will experience game drives in search of Africa's "Big 5." Bring your camera as you encounter lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and leopards in their natural environment

Housing

Students will stay at a beautiful facility near the picturesque fishing village of Simonstown. The location is convenient for day or weekend trips to the many picturesque sites on the Cape. Students will stay in comfortable dormitory rooms. There will be an Intrax Study Abroad On-Site Coordinator living in the residence hall with the students. The facility has a computer room for e-mail, a lounge for movie nights, a recreational room with table tennis and a pool table, and an on-site dining facility.
