The Summer Cultural Exploration program in Granada, Spain is ideal for students who want to learn or improve their Spanish language skills while immersing themselves in Spanish culture and exploring regional sights. Students attend language classes, experience Spanish culture through organized activities, and explore Spain on the weekends through guided excursions. Participants live with a host family in the city of Granada.
A famous Spanish expression claims that there is "nothing so sad as being blind in Granada." After a few hours of walking around this medieval city, you will soon see why. Follow the cobblestone streets into the ancient Albaicín neighborhood and look out onto the awe-inspiring Alhambra, a majestic fortress which served as the final stronghold for the Muslim Empire before Spain's re-conquest in 1492. Bordering the Sierra Nevada mountains and only an hour away from some of Spain's most popular beaches, Granada is home to 300,000 residents, many of whom are students.
Learn
Intensive Spanish courses take place in the morning, Monday through Friday, for four hours per day. Students will be given a placement exam upon arrival and assigned to a class of the appropriate level. Classes are available for students of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Teachers emphasize a personalized approach, and the average student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1. The language school is located in the heart of historic Granada, just a 3-minute walk from the Palacio de Congresos. The famous Alhambra and Albaicín are only 10-15 minutes away by foot. Typical of Andalusian buildings, the school has lots of windows and balconies and is also air-conditioned.
Experience
Organized cultural and leisure activities allow for further exploration of Granada and the surrounding areas. Activities take place two to three afternoons per week and may include: sports, swimming at the pool, regular beach outings and scavenger hunts in Granada's historic center, a visit to Granada's "Parque de las Ciencias" and a walking tour of the Barrio Albaicín. All organized activities are facilitated by an On-Site Coordinator.
Travel
Included in the program, the following weekend excursions allow participants time to enjoy other notable destinations in Spain:
- La Costa Tropical - Enjoy a beach outing to this gorgeous area of Spain where the mountains meet the sea and the coastline is full of coves and rocky outcrops.
- The Alhambra - Explore the fortified Moorish palace built by Muslim kings in the Middle Ages
- Córdoba - Discover this city's long and glorious past and find out why ten centuries ago it was Europe's largest city
- Program Finale: Toledo and Madrid - Discover the city of Toledo, a national landmark famous for its Arab, Jewish, Christian, Visigothic and Roman elements. Toledo's unique cultural legacy is preserved in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. Explore Madrid, the capital of Spain. A cosmopolitan city with a fascinating cultural and artistic heritage, Madrid is home to 73 museums!
